We’re Amazon Employees for Climate Justice (AECJ), an independent group of Amazon employees. We won the Climate Pledge back in 2019, and now we’re pushing for a more responsible rollout of AI.
We have power, and we need you.
We have a window to shift the direction of the AI rollout because policymakers are reaching out to us, as tech workers, for our ideas on how to regulate AI! We’re in the rooms where AI policy is getting decided (we’ve advocated for data center regulation, passed policy in Seattle, and talked to members of Congress), but we need your help for tech workers to have a long-term seat at the table.

WHY: We know things are overwhelming right now, with burnout and pressure at work and tighter deadlines. You may even want to say ‘this is amazing, but I can’t get involved right now’. But the thing is, policymakers are paying attention to AI right now, in (somewhat) real-time, because whistleblowers at frontier AI labs and heightened fears from the public have forced them to take action to regulate AI. This window to create basic safeguards for AI could close quickly if insert-your-theory-about-AI-disaster (a bubble pop, a major hacking event, societal collapse) happens. We already have our foot in the door of rooms where AI policy is getting decided (we’ve advocated for data center regulation, passed policy in Seattle, and talked to members of Congress), but we need your help for tech workers to have a long-term seat at the table.
Can you tell me more about AECJ?
Maybe this is the first time you’re hearing of us, but Amazon Employees for Climate Justice has been organizing with our co-workers since late 2018, when we submitted a shareholder proposal asking our company to reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
That started because several of us who cared about climate got together and tried to figure out how the heck we could use our jobs at Amazon to advocate for something better. And it led to really important things: in 2019, we won the Climate Pledge after over 1500 of us pledged to walk out in the Global Climate Strik
But we aren’t just fighting for a better climate. In 2020, we helped push Amazon to better protect warehouse workers from COVID. Last year, over 1200 of us signed an open letter with our concerns about AI that received national attention. This year, we testified in favor of data center regulations in Seattle, which then passed a 1-year pause to create policy around data centers and AI. This is progress, but we’re not kidding ourselves: There’s so much more that needs to happen to have better lives in the future. To have room to breathe.
And that’s why we need you. You don’t have to have the answers, or even the time, to solve all the problems within our company. We just hope you join our network off Amazon’s internal platforms. You’ll be connected to other co-workers ready to do something about this together.
