A Foot in the Door: How Amazon workers can influence AI policy
We’ll share:
Our recent wins impacting policy on AI (passing legislation in Seattle, sharing tech workers experiences with federal policymakers)
The specific policies we’re exploring (for workers to control more decisions about AI, have more autonomy, and protect the environment and communities)
Our experiences and stories with one another on how AI is impacting us
Upcoming opportunities and the roles we need you for!‘
WHEN: November 14th from 11AM-1 PM PT / 2-4 PM ET
WHERE: In-person in Seattle (exact location after RSVPing), livestreamed everywhere else
WHY:
Lawmakers are reaching out to us (Amazon Employees for Climate Justice aka AECJ 😮) to share our unique perspective as tech workers on how to regulate AI. This is a huge opportunity, and we want to ensure we cover the experiences from all orgs at Amazon… so we need all of us as Amazon workers to come together and make the most of this moment!
We know things are overwhelming right now, with burnout and pressure at work and tighter deadlines. You may even want to say ‘this is amazing, but I can’t get involved right now’. But the thing is, policymakers are paying attention to AI right now, in (somewhat) real-time, because whistleblowers at frontier AI labs and heightened fears from the public have forced them to take action to regulate AI. This window to create basic safeguards for AI could close quickly if insert-your-theory-about-AI-disaster (a bubble pop, a major hacking event, societal collapse) happens. We already have our foot in the door of rooms where AI policy is getting decided (we’ve advocated for data center regulation, passed policy in Seattle, and talked to members of Congress), but we need your help for tech workers to have a long-term seat at the table.
There’s lots of roles you can take. You don’t have to be a policy expert, or have the time to become one, or take a public role; we just need you in it with us to share your experiences and show legislators that a LOT of tech workers want real solutions. Start by joining us on November 14th from 11 AM-1 PM PT / 2-4 PM ET in-person in Seattle or over livestream. We’ll share more about our opportunity and role in shaping AI policy and the ways you can be part of our next steps. Let’s build a future that we’re proud of, one with a little more room to breathe
